Several institutions in the United States are researching permanent pavement, including the National Asphalt Technology Center (NCAT) pavement test track located at Auburn University in Alabama. On the test track, researchers compared different paving sections to determine the lifespan of different re paving methods. The accelerated road testing conducted by multiple research institutions includes continuously running high flow simulated traffic on the test section, rapidly loading typical traffic volumes on the test track for years or even decades over several months. Researchers study runway samples to understand the aging speed, aging mode, and expected service life of roads.
